Story

In a bid to garner support from the cryptocurrency community, former US President Donald Trump has declared his plans to promote Bitcoin mining within the United States if he is re-elected. The announcement was made on June 12 through a post on Trump's Truth Social account, where he emphasized the potential of Bitcoin mining to bolster US energy dominance and act as a countermeasure to the proposed Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs).

Trump's post highlighted that "Bitcoin mining may be our last line of defense against a CBDC," and criticized the current administration's stance on Bitcoin, stating, "Biden’s hatred of Bitcoin only helps China, Russia, and the Radical Communist Left. We want all the remaining Bitcoin to be MADE IN THE USA!!!"

This announcement comes after a meeting Trump held on June 11 with representatives from prominent Bitcoin mining companies, including CleanSpark, Riot Platforms, and Marathon Digital. Matthew Schultz, Executive Chairman of CleanSpark, stated that Trump has a strong understanding of the Bitcoin mining sector. Brian Morgenstein, head of policy at Riot Platforms, expressed confidence in Trump’s commitment to protecting the rights of Bitcoin owners and miners.

David Bailey, CEO of Bitcoin Magazine, who also attended the meeting, described the event as "a historic moment in our journey towards hyperbitcoinization." He noted that Trump gathered key figures in the American Bitcoin mining industry and committed to supporting their cause both domestically and internationally.

Trump's support for the Bitcoin mining sector comes amid increased scrutiny over the industry's environmental impact and strain on local power grids. Earlier this year, US authorities attempted to collect data on crypto miners' energy consumption rates but faced opposition from stakeholders in the sector.

Meanwhile, Trump's pro-cryptocurrency stance appears to be boosting his election chances, with prediction platform Polymarket indicating a 56% probability of him winning, while Joe Biden's chances have dropped to 35%.
