The pattern of focusing almost exclusively on states where the two-party vote difference was eight points or less was also observed in the 2016, 2012, and 2008 elections.

In 2020, nearly all (96%) general election campaign events (204 out of 212) took place in the 12 states where the Republican share of the two-party vote fell within a tight eight-point margin between 46% and 54%.
