Biden family is alleged of having engaged in international influence peddling schemes, bribery, and a Justice Department cover-up

  • Topic

Background

During his tenure as Vice President under Obama, Joe Biden led efforts encouraging Ukraine to adopt reforms, drawing from his extensive foreign policy experience. In 2014, his son, Hunter, joined the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings, raising concerns due to the company's corruption history and potential policy conflicts. Hunter also had business ventures in China, and in 2006, alongside his uncle James, acquired an international hedge fund.

Joe Biden consistently stated he was unaware of his son's foreign business activities. A 2020 Republican-led investigation found no evidence of Joe Biden's wrongdoing, only noting Hunter's use of the family name in business. During his 2019 presidential campaign, Trump's team, led by Rudy Giuliani, sought evidence against the Bidens in Ukraine. They highlighted Hunter's appointment to Burisma despite his lack of energy expertise. Joe Biden had previously urged Ukraine to dismiss prosecutor Viktor Shokin, leading to claims from Trump allies that this was to shield Burisma and Hunter. However, this move was in line with international policy views on Shokin's corruption.

In 2020, the New York Post reported on a laptop allegedly belonging to Hunter, which became a focal point for Republicans. By 2023, no evidence implicating Joe Biden emerged from the laptop's contents. Republicans, after gaining House control in 2023, promised further investigations. The House Oversight Committee held its first public hearing under an impeachment inquiry on September 28, 2023.
