Statement
Sir Thomas Lawrence painted seven oil portraits of Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington. The two men were the same age, and although Wellington disliked sitting for portraits, he sat for Lawrence on several occasions. Lawrence's two earliest portraits of the Duke, both full-length, were painted in 1814. One of these portraits is owned by the Marquess of Londonderry and is on loan to Apsley House, the Duke's former residence in London. Other portrait is owned by the Queen and is displayed in the Waterloo Chamber at Windsor Castle.
