  • Drug

Artemether is an antimalarial agent utilized primarily for the treatment of malaria, specifically for severe cases in its injectable form. It is a derivative of artemisinin, which is isolated from the antimalarial plant Artemisia annua. In terms of its pharmacology, both artemether and another drug called artesunate are metabolized in the body to produce an active antimalarial metabolite known as dihydroartemisinin (DHA).

Commonly, artemether is used in combination with another drug, lumefantrine, to treat acute uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. This combination, artemether-lumefantrine, is recognized as a primary medicine for the treatment of malaria and has been extensively studied for its effectiveness . The proper dosing of this combination varies among patients and typically follows doctor's instructions or the guidance provided on the drug label.
