According to a criminal indictment, Senator Bob Menendez, the Democratic leader of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, googled the price of kilos of gold multiple times while he was allegedly accepting bribes.

The indictment alleges that Wael Hana, who is allegedly involved in the scheme, paid $23,000 to bring Nadine Menendez's mortgage current after it was foreclosed in July 2019.

Senator Menendez's most recent financial disclosure shows that his wife still has up to $250,000 worth of gold bars. It also shows that she sold gold throughout 2022 for a total of at least $200,000. Senators are only required to report broad ranges of most assets that they and their spouses hold.
