Pamela Mays McDonald of Philadelphia, who attended the original March on Washington as an 8-year-old, remarked on the progress that has been made in terms of representation of women at the event. She recalled that only one woman, Daisy Bates of Arkansas, was allowed to speak at the 1963 march, but that this year, there were five women on the podium.
