Family-centered treatment for substance use disorders

Description

Parents with alcohol or drug use problems may have difficulty regulating stress, processing emotions, and fulfilling the many childrearing tasks that are essential for children’s healthy social and emotional development. Family-centered treatment for substance use disorders may be used to simultaneously address substance misuse by parents and the needs of their children with this ACE exposure.

Abstract

Family-centered treatment for substance use disorders approaches utilize integrated program models that combine evidence-based treatments for substance use disorders (e.g., medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder) with a range of preventive services (e.g., mental health services, parenting education and training, medical and nutrition services, education and employment assistance, child care, children’s services, and aftercare). Programs may be delivered in residential or outpatient settings.
