Enhanced primary care may be used to identify and address ACE exposures with brief screening assessments and referral to intervention services and supports. For children, assessments may be used with parents or caregivers to identify risks in the family environment such as parental alcohol or drug use, depression, stress, the use of harsh punishment, as well as intimate partner violence.27 For adults, assessments may be used to identify a history of ACE exposures to assist with risk mitigation and improve treatment outcomes.28,29 Follow-up intervention services are tailored to assessment findings and coordinated with local community agencies.
