Higher Ground

  • Track

[Verse 1]

People keep on learnin'

Soldiers keep on warrin'

World keep on turnin'

Cause it won't be too long

[Verse 2]

Powers keep on lyin'

While your people keep on dyin'

World keep on turnin'

Cause it won't be too long

[Chorus]

I'm so darn glad he let me try it again

Cause my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin

I'm so glad that I know more than I knew then

Gonna keep on tryin'

Till I reach my highest ground

[Verse 3]

Teachers keep on teachin'

Preachers keep on preachin'

World keep on turnin'

Cause it won't be too long

Oh no

[Verse 4]

Lovers keep on lovin'

Believers keep on believin'

Sleepers just stop sleepin'

Cause it won't be too long

Oh no

[Chorus]

I'm so glad that he let me try it again

Cause my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin

I'm so glad that I know more than I knew then

Gonna keep on tryin'

Till I reach my highest ground…Whew!

Till I reach my highest ground

No one's gonna bring me down

Oh no

Till I reach my highest ground

Don't let nobody bring you down

Statement

"Higher Ground" is a powerful statement on resilience and spiritual rebirth. Wonder wrote the song shortly after being involved in a serious car accident that left him in a coma. The near-death experience inspired him to reflect on themes of reincarnation, the continuous struggle for a higher level of consciousness, and the importance of learning from past experiences to progress in life. The chorus, "I'm so darn glad he let me try it again, 'Cause my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin," encapsulates this message of gratitude and the desire for personal growth and redemption. "Higher Ground" was not only a personal statement for Wonder but also resonated with the broader social and political contexts of the early 1970s. During a time of significant social change, civil rights movements, and spiritual awakening, the song's themes of self-improvement and determination struck a chord with many listeners. It became an anthem for perseverance and hope amid adversity. The song's impact extended beyond its immediate commercial success. It influenced various musicians and genres, from R&B and hip hop to rock and gospel, illustrating Wonder's broad musical influence. The use of electronic instruments in "Higher Ground" also paved the way for future developments in electronic music.
