Víctor Lidio Jara Martínez (September 28, 1932 – September 16, 1973) was a Chilean teacher, theater director, poet, singer-songwriter and Communist political activist. He played a pivotal role among neo-folkloric musicians who established the Nueva canción chilena (New Chilean Song) movement. Victor Jara was arrested by the Chilean military shortly after the 11 September 1973 coup led by Augusto Pinochet. He was tortured, his fingers and tongue were cut off so that he could not play the guitar or sing. After four days, he was killed with forty four shots.
