Does Safe Consumption Work to Treat Drug Addiction?
Description
Manny's is creating a time and place for honest conversations about the issues and challenges facing the city we love. San Francisco, Chicago and New York have led the country in implementing harm reduction strategies intended to help people addicted to drugs make incremental improvements to their health. In 2000, the San Francisco Health Commisison made harm reduction an official public health policy in order to mitigate the adverse health effects of substance abuse. More than 20 years later, has harm reduction worked? What does harm reduction look like in practice? Do safe injection sites and needle exchange programs encourage drug use or help get folks to wean themselves off of drugs? Is abstinence the goal? Are there better tools to fight substance abuse? How does harm reduction impact drug treatment? What can San Francisco learn from other cities? Should the city's policy change? Manny's is hosting this event on harm reduction so you have an opportunity to hear from experts and activists on the frontlines of the city's drug crisis. Join us for this critical conversation about the effectiveness and future of harm reduction in San Francisco.
