Tenderloin walk 4/04/24
Metrics
How many people did we serve and what are their demographics?
35 total people, 10 of them were housed
Roughly 50% knew about YWAM already
Mostly 30-50 years olds, about 1/3 were women and 2/3 were men
Mostly from SF or the Bay area
They stay outside or in SROs in the Tenderloin
Is follow up needed?
If so, who will follow up and when?
If so, who will follow up and when?
As soon as we see him. Especially if the brother seems receptive to reconnecting.
Team Debriefing
Conduct a debriefing session with the outreach team after your street outreach walk or event.
Observations from the walk
Kyle saw G, the first unhoused friend he made when moving to SF.
He used to offer G a coffee on his walks. Later he found out that G doesn’t like coffee.
Introduction to a totally different world. What do people actually need or want?
Challenges
There was a time where someone who knew a regular, and his brother also came in looking for him, and offering to pay for him to join the best recovery program in the area. He declined.
This person was rationalizing not going to recovery: good desire to rationalize bad action
His reasoning was, "I love what’s going on at YWAM and I want to stay here and help them"
“My son needs me” so he would need to stay in that neighborhood.
“I want you to be a good Dad, we all want you to be a good Dad.”- Kent
“We don’t want you to compound trauma.” (drugs and mental health)
Surprises
Playing grateful dead is a great conversation starter
Mike knows Tony from YWAM’s pop up church
He goes to Healing Well across the street
They offer Yoga, Breathing exorcise, and art classes
Learnings
Bombas donating socks in the TL has changed the foot health of the Tenderloin
“Nobody else has asked me for socks ever in my life.” -Mike
Yra from Issenguard has another solution for poor TL foothealth
Anti Fungal creme- they sent them to Ukraine
Group of 10 people- wash their feet and put the creme on every day
Goal is to give Bombas Socks an award at some point
There has been a great shift, where people come in for relationships vs resources
