Background

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a humanitarian program in the United States that provides temporary legal status to nationals of certain countries experiencing severe conditions such as ongoing armed conflict, environmental disasters, or extraordinary and temporary conditions that prevent safe return. TPS beneficiaries are allowed to live and work in the U.S. for designated periods, although TPS does not lead directly to permanent residence or citizenship. The designation of countries for TPS and the length of these designations are determined by the U.S. government and can be a subject of political decision-making.
