Background

The Paris Agreement, often referred to as the Paris Climate Accords, is an international treaty on climate change which was adopted in December 2015 under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The agreement covers climate change mitigation, adaptation, and finance. The primary goal of the Paris Agreement is to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with efforts to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Participating countries have committed to reaching peak greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible with the goal to support both current and future climate actions.
