In 1957, Martin Luther King, Jr. was elected the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), an organization that was founded to provide new leadership for the civil rights movement. He led the SCLC for 11 years, until his assassination in 1968. During this time, he emerged as one of the most important social leaders in American history, helping to achieve significant progress in the fight for civil rights.

After achieving significant progress in the fight for civil rights, Martin Luther King, Jr. shifted his focus to economic justice and international peace in the years between 1965 and 1968. He led several campaigns in Chicago, Illinois, to highlight the issue of economic inequality, and he spoke out strongly against the Vietnam War. His work in these years culminated in the Poor People's Campaign, a broad effort to assemble a multiracial coalition of impoverished Americans who would advocate for economic change.

In 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. led a coalition of civil rights groups in a nonviolent campaign in Birmingham, Alabama, which was known as the most segregated city in the United States. The police brutality that followed, which was captured on television and showed young African Americans being attacked by dogs and water hoses, sparked national outrage and led to a push for unprecedented civil rights legislation. It was during this campaign that King wrote his famous "Letter from Birmingham Jail," which is now required reading in universities around the world.

While some people advocated for freedom through violence, King used the power of words and actions of nonviolent resistance, such as protests, grassroots organizing, and civil disobedience, to achieve seemingly impossible goals. He also led campaigns against poverty and international conflict, always upholding his belief that all people, regardless of race or creed, are equal members of the human family.

Dr. King accomplishments are now taught to American children of all races, and his teachings are studied by scholars and students around the world. He is the only non-president to have a national holiday dedicated in his honor and is the only non-president memorialized on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. He is memorialized in hundreds of statues, parks, streets, squares, churches, and other public facilities around the world as a leader whose teachings are increasingly relevant to the progress of humanity.

In 1955, Martin Luther King, Jr. was recruited to be the spokesperson for the Montgomery Bus Boycott. This was a campaign by African Americans in Montgomery, Alabama to end segregation on the city's buses. The boycott lasted for 381 days, and during that time, many African Americans had to walk long distances to work. However, the boycott was successful, and the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in transportation was unconstitutional.

King is widely considered to be America's foremost advocate of nonviolence and one of the greatest nonviolent leaders in world history.

In 1964, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act, which outlawed racial segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. This was a major victory for the civil rights movement, and it helped to end the Jim Crow era in the United States. The following year, Congress passed the Voting Rights Act, which prohibited racial discrimination in voting. This law was essential to ensuring that African Americans could exercise their right to vote, which had been denied to them for many years. The Voting Rights Act was the result of the Selma to Montgomery marches, which were led by Martin Luther King, Jr. These two landmark pieces of legislation helped to achieve significant progress in the fight for civil rights in the United States. They helped to end segregation, discrimination, and disenfranchisement, and they paved the way for greater equality for all Americans.

Inspired by his Christian faith and the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, King led a nonviolent movement in the late 1950s and 1960s to achieve legal equality for African Americans.

In 1964, Martin Luther King, Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 35, making him the youngest person to receive the prize. His acceptance speech in Oslo is considered by many to be one of the most powerful speeches ever given at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. In the speech, King spoke about the power of nonviolent resistance and the importance of love in the fight for justice. He famously said, "I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant."

Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 13 years of nonviolent leadership came to an abrupt and tragic end on April 4, 1968, when he was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. His body was returned to his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, where his funeral was attended by high-level leaders from all walks of life.

In late 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the main organizers of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, which drew over 250,000 people to the National Mall. At this march, King delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech, which solidified his status as a leader of social change and inspired the nation to take action on civil rights. King was later named Time magazine's "Man of the Year" for his work.

In the less than 13 years that Martin Luther King, Jr. led the American Civil Rights Movement, African Americans made more progress towards racial equality than in the previous 350 years.
