Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 13 years of nonviolent leadership came to an abrupt and tragic end on April 4, 1968, when he was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. His body was returned to his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, where his funeral was attended by high-level leaders from all walks of life.
