Description
The murder of Jorge Luis Zambrano "Rasquiña" in December 2020 triggered a unprecedented wave of violence as rival gangs the Choneros, the Lobos, and the Tiguerones vied for power. The violence has been particularly acute in prisons, where the gangs have been fighting for control. In 2021, there were 316 murders in Ecuadorian prisons, making it the deadliest year on record.
